Be respectful of others, but do what is best for you first. After you are taken care of, then you can worry about the needs of everyone else in your life. A guru from India offered me that guidance years ago. However, it is always easier for me to share the advice with others than it is to follow myself!
Fun Fact: I was married to my partner of ten years in a Buddhist Temple. Some people thought we were crazy and assumed the monks would not accept us since we were non-Buddhist. Five female friends witnessed our ceremony.
